SYMBIA LOGISTICS ACQUIRES iD COMMERCE + LOGISTICS

Growing 3PL provider broadens e-commerce capabilities

Denver, Feb. 21, 2019 (via: GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The latest acquisition for Symbia Logistics, a Colorado-based warehousing, logistics and e-commerce fulfillment company, is Chicago-based iD Commerce + Logistics (IDC), a leader in third-party logistics (3PL) and e-commerce fulfillment. This acquisition — the fourth in the past 12 months — positions Symbia to more effectively provide economical shipping options for its clients throughout the Midwest and Northeast.

Meet Dan Arriola of iD Commerce + Logistics in Glendale Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Arriola.

Dan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

We started off providing order fulfillment and direct mail for the commercial printing industry. We knew pretty quickly that long-term we were going to need to service the e-commerce industry and that “paper” related orders and direct mail were shrinking industries. We decided to start our “pivot” in the early 2000’s, it was painful because we had to learn a new industry, upgrade our team, and exit long-term partnerships. I remember in 2006 discussing our strategy with a much larger competitor in the direct mail industry and he thought I was nuts – today he’s out of business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

It’s been a fun ride but there’s always challenges. About five years ago I asked myself “do I have the right team in place to take this company to the next level? Sadly, I knew I had to make some tough calls on team members who had been with us for many years. It was a painful learning process but it was the best decision I’ve made in a longtime. Today, we have an amazing team and our company has expanded services, added clients, & improved margins.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with iD Commerce + Logistics – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

ID Commerce + Logistics is an order fulfillment company focused on the middle market retail industry. We specialize in unique programs within e-commerce such as subscription, kitting, and support of multi-channel marketers. We have a very large portfolio of beauty care clients and love that vertical. I am most proud of two things – being recognized by our community as one of the Top Places to Work and the partnership we have with our clients. We have some amazing long-term clients who have trusted us with their business and we have grown together.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?

I want to continue to be recognized as a great place to work. I want team members to know that we want to foster their growth and development. We have some amazing clients that have grown with us and we want to be a part of their continued success. We are looking to expand and increase our participation in what I call the “Amazon ecosystem” which I feel is a great growth engine for IDC.

CEO Dan Arriola Discusses Amazon’s PillPack Acquisition

I really do believe that most CEOs are nothing more than empty suits and the recent acquisition of PillPack by Amazon proves my point. A week after appointing a CEO for its healthcare joint venture with Berkshire Hathaway & JP Morgan, Amazon acquires PillPack, an online pharmacy that lets users buy medication in pre-made doses, for under $1 Billion dollars. Walgreens could have easily made this acquisition for half the price a few years ago and made it harder for Amazon to enter the e-health market. Instead it invested in Theranos which was a huge loss for Walgreens investors & opened the door for Amazon to enter the market.

The PillPack acquisition will help Amazon scale their pharmacy business & integrate it with their new JV Healthcare company. The acquisition also forces the pharmacy companies to respond and my guess is they will make some overpriced transaction or merge.

Pharmacy stocks are down big after the Amazon announcement. These are all self inflicted wounds by CEOs focused on stock buy backs & tax inversion plans instead of competitors like Amazon who have slowly been sneaking up on their core business.
